I only got to hear the last ten minutes of Noni Hazlehurst’s presentation about Reading, literacy and the foundations of lifelong learning, but the passion for her chosen topic was obvious. Kelly Czarnecki’s presentation about Teen Second Life was no different. Two very different ways of learning and both of use in our public libraries.

It was good to listen to the variety of speakers and network with other ‘library’ people! I really enjoyed Bob McNulty’s Livable Communities session on Monday. Here’s a website that looks at some of the most livable cities in US.

Tuesday got off to a great start with breakfast at the Ipswich International hosted by Tutoring Australasia, providers of yourtutor. Attendees heard from 4 speakers about their libraries’ experiences with yourtutor.
The speakers were:
Tania Paull - State Library of Queensland
Penny McGinty - Ipswich Library & Information Service
Laurel Henry - Maroochy Shire Libraries
Aggie Partridge - Mackay Libraries
All of these libraries have made a concerted effort to promote the yourtutor service to their customers, and the effort has paid off. These four library services had the highest usage of the yourtutor service in Queensland. Feedback about yourtutor was all positive, and the general feeling seemed to be that the service was very valuable in providing accurate and friendly help to students in an anonymous environment that they are comfortable using. A number of comments were made that participating libraries were keen to continue offering the yourtutor service.

The conference is off to a good start! Day one offered a range of speakers with the morning addresses by Bob McNulty & Dr Alan Bundy emphasizing the importance public libraries play in knowledge creation, education, life style and community life yet not attracting appropriate funding.
Cath Wood shared what the Ipswich Library has meant over the years to her and her family - a testimony to the pivotal roles libraries play.
The afternoon brought an inspirational talk by Khoa Do - he has led a very interesting & challenging life for one so young! Charmaine McVea was up last sharing her experiences with organizational vitality.
Please join in a discussion of the day - your comments & feedback are welcome.
